The Elephant Gathering at Minneriya National Park

Around August – September every year, the receding banks of the Minneriya Lake are covered by about 300 Asian elephants in search of food and water. This spectacular phenomenon known as 'the Gathering' is possibly the highest concentration of Asian elephants in a single location and ideal setting to observe and understand the social dynamics of elephants, especially the feeding, courting and fighting of the giant mammals and the matriarchs who tenderly guard their young. Many safaris are organized to the Minneriya National Park during the season and accommodation around Sigiriya, Dambulla, Habarana, Kandalama and Giritale would be the best options.

Surfing in Arugam Bay - 2015

The resplendent waters surrounding the moon-shaped curl of soft golden sand in the eastern shores of Sri Lanka are known to be one of the best 'point brakes' in the world. Experience and ride through the majestic waves of the ocean as they break in an exhilarating rush. Surfing is best in Arugam Bay during the season of April to October each year. During this time is conducted the UK Pro-Surfing Association's Sri Lanka Surf Championships, an event open to all and where the entire place becomes a hub of activity as the best surfers across the seas comes together to participate in the thrilling event in one of the finest surfing hotspots in the world.

The Hindu Festival Deepavali - 2015

The Hindu festival of lights, Deepavali is celebration of the triumph of good over evil and a time when prayers are offered to goddess Lakshmi for the renewal of health, wealth and prosperity. The festival with its origins in India is marked by illumination and the making of figurines of crystal sugar known as Misiri which are distributed as delicious sweets. Hindus celebrate this event by taking an oil bath and wearing new clothes in addition to going to the temple to make obeisance to their gods. It is also a time of visiting friends and family, carrying the blessings and spirit of the festival. Burning fire crackers too is a significant element of this festival which is open for the participation of all.

National Bird Watching Month 2015

The tropical climate and exotic landscape of the paradise isle of Sri Lanka make it a true haven for bird watching enthusiasts. Home to more than 400 bird species with around 23 endemics and 200 migratory from India, Siberia, Scandinavia and Western Europe, the best time for bird watching enthusiasts to visit the island is towards the latter part of the year. In fact the month of December has been declared as the National Bird Month by the Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, the national affiliate of Bird Life International. There are many bird sanctuaries spread throughout the island including the Kumana National Park, the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary, the Biodhinagala Sanctuary and Udawatte Kele among many others and many activities are organized during the National Bird Month for the public, exposing them to the treasures of bird life.

Whale Watching in Kalpitiya and Mirissa

The whale watching season in Kalpitiya and Mirissa is in full swing by January every year with whales and dolphins parading their presence in the Sothern and North-Western oceans of Sri Lanka. In the oceans around Kalpitiya sperm whales, Blue Whales, pigmy sperm whales and pilot whales gather in large pods of fifty to hundred members, some in water as shallow as 30 meters, with large concentration gathering around Dutch reef. The whales are accompanied by large pods of Spinner Dolphins who could be found within a just one hour boat ride from Kalpitiya harbour. Other than the most common, the spinner dolphins, other species including Risso's Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin and Striped Dolphin too makes appearance although not as frequently or in such large numbers. Meanwhile Blue whales, Bryde´s whales, Sperm whales, Fin whales, bottle nose dolphins, common dolphins and spinner dolphins grace the waters of Southern Seas of Sri Lanka from Weligama to Mirrissa and can be found within just eight to ten nautical miles from Mirissa harbor.

67th National day of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka celebrates the gaining of her independence from Colonial rule with magnificent pomp and pageantry and the spirit of patriotism resonates in every street corner on the island's National Day. The national flag is hoisted and the national anthem sung, the traditional lamp is lit and the processions begin, complete with meticulously coordinated military parades, firing of canons and various religious and cultural performances, all to pay a tribute to forefathers of the land for their glorious feat. The celebrations open to all, continued year after year, signifying the continued united efforts as the people of one nation come together to celebrate her cherished sovereignty.

he second edition of the Wild Elephant Trail will be held from 4th March to 11th March 2016. The Wild Elephant Trail" is an ultra running event covering about 210 km over a period of 7 days. The race is designed for all types of runners, from absolute beginners to experienced amateurs and professionals. The runners are from different countries representing various religions, cultures, genders and ages.

Horse Races & Carnivals in Nuwara Eliya

Set the lofty mountainous region of the country, Nuwara Eliya comes alive during the April season. Also known as 'Little England', this charming old town is a hive of activity ranging from car races to cycling, boating, golf tournaments and many more festivities, carnivals and live performances. The horse racing introduced by the British is indeed a popular event and has yet retained its prominence particularly among elite. Nuwara Eliya is certainly the place to beat the heat and to dance to a different beat, as the island is busy with traditional new-year celebrations during the holiday season.
